Ruth grew up in Hazleton, Pennsylvania and now resides in Olympia, Washington along with her husband who is a professional horseman, specializing in the sports of Show Jumping and Combined Training. Ruth is a talented artist with backgrounds in Australian cake decorating, Air Brush Art, Lapidary, Wire Wrapping, Glass Fusing, Torch-work Beads and PMC. She was initially introduced to PMC (Precious Metal Clay) when she was doing a Wire Wrap demonstration at a Rock & Mineral show in Port Townsend, Washington and met Kitti DeLong, a Metal Clay instructor and artist. The intrigue of the new craft was instant as Ruth fell in love with the beauty and flexibility of this versatile medium. It has proven to be a wonderful vehicle, blending well with Ruth’s own curious, adventurous and creative spirit. Because of this there is considerable variety in the work that she does, which can run the gamut from delicate to bold, ethnic to modern and practical to whimsical. One of her favorite things about PMC is the capacity to incorporate other art forms into her work, using the crafts of glass beading, lapidary, porcelain and wire-wrap to augment her projects.
She has also found great satisfaction in sharing her knowledge and is currently teaching PMC and wire work throughout the Northwest. The core of her own education was through the channels of PMC Connection.
En route to being named Senior Instructor for the Northwestern United States she received instruction from Meredith Arnold of Bellvue Wa, Kansas Senior Instructor Sondra Busch, and Director of Education for PMC Connection, Mary Ann Devos, at the William Holland School of Art in Georgia.
In her quest for knowledge she has also attended classes with Robert Dancik (Faux Bone), Stacey Frost & Cheryl Matson (Torch Work Beads), Debbie Rijns (South African Spoons), Kendra Bruno (Chain Maille) , Victoria Hansen (Viking Knit Chains) and Linda Woodside (Beading). Other valuable sources of her knowledge come from her own penchant for trying new things in her studio as well as what she gleans in the process of her teaching.
Ruth is a regular instructor at Shipwreck Beads in Olympia and has also taught at the 2007 Artist Retreat in Dallas Texas, the Northwest Rock and Mineral National Federation Show in Eugene Oregon, the U.S. Naval Base in Naples Italy, the 2006 PMC conference at Purdue University as well as numerous studios in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
Her own work has been exhibited at the Hillsboro Rock and Mineral Show, Hillsboro OR, the Northwest Rock and Mineral National Federation Show in Eugene Oregon, the Tenino Rock Club in Tenino Washington, the Heart of the West Gallery in Winthrop and Shipwreck Beads in Olympia. Much as she thoroughly enjoys the process of her own creations, she also gets a great deal of satisfaction from the pleasure and empowerment that others get when they find out that they can do similar things. She revels at the prospect of growth in her own education as a craftsman and artist as well as facilitating the same for others.
